No 1 question in life

By Buro Winners

So, here we are. In a totally new situation, with a lot of new challenges. How to study at home? How to become productive with temptations like Netflix, Facebook or your bed so close? How to stay in contact with your friends, study mates and relatives? In the upcoming posts we try to help you with these questions and support you to make the best of it. This time on personal leadership and the best question in life.

This is not a blogpost

This might seem like a blogpost, but actually it’s a mini-workshop. So, in order to follow along, quickly grab a piece of paper and some pencils. Make three columns and follow the next steps.

1. Select your favourite life artists

For a moment think about three life artists. People you admire for the WAY they handle or handled life. The ones that celebrated failure, because there was something to learn from, the ones living in miserable conditions but making the best of it or the ones that were really good in celebrating the simple things. It might be someone like Nelson Mandela who spent so many years in prison and did not come out bitter, but it might also be your grandma, your uncle or your mother for another good reason. Select three inspiring persons and put each name at the top of a column.

2. What do great life artists do?

Write down all the great things your life artists do that make them inspiring. Focus on each person separately and make the list as long as possible. We are going for quantity, not (yet) for quality. Don’t jump too quickly to the next step. It’s okay if there’s moments of silence. Just be curious of what is coming next. Make sure you have a long list of things under each life artist.

3. What kind of life artist do you want to be?

Select the most important aspects from the three lists. End up with 3 of your favourite aspects. It doesn’t matter where they come from. It’s okay if all three come from one artist. Turn around your piece of paper and put the three aspects in capital on the paper.

4. Guide yourself …

From now on, the back of this piece of paper is the new front of this paper. Take a good look at your three favourite aspects. You are going to let these words be your ultimate guide in the current situation. How? By putting these three aspects into your thinking, your intentions and actions.

5. Ask the no 1. question in life

To determine:

-        what you can improve at the moment,

-        what you should do to be proud of yourself now,

-        how you can be the best you can be,

you ask yourself a very powerful question: To what extend are you living these three aspects at this moment? Or to put it into one, nice, simple and maybe somewhat confronting question:

 WOULD YOU FOLLOW YOU?

6. Put thoughts into actions

No one can answer this question with one simple YES. There is always something you can improve. You know how you would like to act in the current situation. And there is nothing against it, because these three aspects are the most positive things you can do. So think of three intentions for tonight, tomorrow and the days ahead. Take a look in a mirror for a minute, put a little smile on your face and tell yourself what you are going to do and how much joy, happiness and pride it will give you.

 Stay safe.

Lead yourself.

You’re great!
