Subtle welding
In the work of our new welding tutor, Sophia de Vries, you can see just how subtle welding art can be. She draws her inspiration from the landscapes of Iceland, Slovakia and Poland. Dilapidated buildings, isolated houses, huts and trees. She is searching for a sense of grandeur; small works become large, taking up space.Shopia graduated in 1993 from the CABK Kampen Academy of Art (now ArtEZ Zwolle) with a master's degree in Monumental Art.
Memory and meaning
For her, monumental art is not about scale, but about memory and meaning. The word monument derives from the Latin monere—to remind. The steel sculptures capture personal memories and experiences, transforming them into quiet, enduring forms.
Steel is the primary materia voor haar. Through welding, forging, grinding and polishing, she creates objects that reveal both strength and care. Although shaped by a demanding process, the finished sculptures remain simple, fragile and intimate.
