Introduction blog Sietse van Mossel

There are certain points in time when it is time to stop. Stop thinking, stop stressing. Time to start looking around, taking in everything around you and just enjoy. This is exactly what I did, on the third of September, the first day I saw my new office on the third floor of the Bastille. I looked out of the window, and what I saw was astonishing. A campus in bloom. Full of life, full of energy. People

practicing sports, people practicing their crafts in theatre, arts and music, and people working to make their associations as great as possible. All of this is allowed through this blooming campus. It has amazing sport facilities and an amazing centre for culture. It is a campus made by and for the students. A campus, like none other in The Netherlands. A campus we can all be proud of. Our Campus.

In short, the campus left me flabbergasted. It left me inspired. And I have the feeling I am not the only one who gets inspired by our Campus. I see students relaxing, (re)discovering themselves, and, most off all, committing to the More Than A Degree program. It is the greatest honour that I get to work on our High Tech, Human Touch Campus, that I am allowed to represent all these students as portfolio Sports and Arts this year!

Three years ago I moved from the always bustling city of Leiden to the far, far city of Enschede. The first day of the Kick-in was for me the first day ever in the Twente region. It was a Kick-in that I entered curious, excited, and a bit scared. I mean, I couldn’t understand a word of what they said in the supermarket. After these exciting first days I already knew I would feel at home. I made new friends, overcame challenges and discovered great associations. I also discovered that the bachelor Technical Medicine wasn’t quite the same as the bachelor Medicine. All in all it was an exciting week, full of fun.

During this kick-in I got to know a lot of sports and arts associations: every single one with a different atmosphere. I got inspired to become part of this unique life on Campus. The last few years I have been a proud member of DRV Euros, DSV de Skeuvel, TC Ludica and DHC Drienerlo. Pretty impressive for a “kakker” from the west, who before the kick-in only knew the sports tennis, golf and hockey. After a lot of committee work, in my second year of studying I got the chance to become a member of the board of TC Ludica. This year taught me a lot and was at the same time a lot of fun, but most of all, it inspired me to pursue more board functions.

I have now finished my Bachelors in Technical Medicine and saw an amazing opportunity to join the board of the Student Union and extend the amazing experience I had while being part of the board of Ludica. I am lucky to be part of a great team of very motivated people and can’t wait to work with them the coming year. I know a huge challenge is ahead of me, but my predecessor Femke de Gooijer gave me a great starting point.

Next year is going to be an amazing year in which all of us should not forget to just stop for once in a while, and take a good look around to see what amazing things we already achieved and will achieve. And for you, the reader of this, please also just stop for a while, and also look around to see our beautiful, blooming campus, and by the chance you are close by, please pay us a visit in the SU office for a nice cup of coffee.
