To deepen your understanding, you will receive an explanation of the case study, and finally, you will attend a targeted board training session.

After lunch in the De Bastille building, it is time to get to work on the case study with your colleagues. You will do this by participating in lobbying sessions with UT administrators from the Executive Board, Supervisory Board, Finance, Campus Facility Management, and U-Today departments. Finally, you and your colleagues will present your plan, which will be evaluated by the jury. We will conclude with social drinks.

ABOUT THE STUDENT UNION

The Executive Board of the University of Twente has mandated the Student Union to write policy regarding sports and culture, extracurricular personal development, and (the introduction to) the student living environment. This means that the Student Union is authorized to determine what happens in these areas for students. The SU participates fully in discussions and decision-making regarding changes at our university, how (extracurricular) personal development fits into this context, and how all of this impacts daily student life. What will this university look like in 20 years? And how can we, students, contribute to that? The mission of the SU is therefore: ‘Everything we do is done for our fellow students – to empower them to achieve more than a degree’.

Additionally, in its overarching role, the Student Union acts as an advocate for approximately 12,000 students and a point of contact for umbrella organizations, associations, foundations, and external parties. In short, the SU plays an active role in everything that concerns students.

About the STUDENT UNION

The Executive Board of University of Twente has mandated the Student Union to write the policy for sports and culture, extracurricular personal development and (the introduction to) the living environment of students. This means that the Student Union gets to decide what happens in these areas for students. The SU is highly involved with and decides on the changes at our university, how (extracurricular) personal development can positioned in it and how all this affects daily student life. What would this university look like in 20 years? And how can we, students, contribute to that? Thus, the SU's mission statement reads, “Everything we do is done for our fellow students - to empower them to achieve more than a degree.

In addition, the Student Union, from its umbrella role, represents the interests of about 12,000 students and is a point of contact for umbrella organisations, associations, foundations and external parties. In short, the SU plays an active role in everything that concerns students.

About the board year

During a board year at the SU, you take your personal development and that of others to the next level. Main things past board members have learned are: thinking in solutions, lobbying with different parties, taking a positive approach, formulating clearly, setting goals and managing. The various portfolios within the Student Union Board offer a range of areas of expertise, each with its own challenges. Every day you will work from the SU office in the Bastille. The SU board members talk to each other a lot during meetings, projects, or informally sparring about the challenges within their portfolios.

This is just the tip of the iceberg and each board member would love to tell you more about it!

These are the descriptions of the portfolios that switch in September:

  1. President, portfolioholder Strategy & Policy, Staff & Organisation
  2. Portfolioholder Finance, Accommodation, and Business management
  3. Portfolioholder Sports and Culture
  4. Portfolioholder Communication, Internationalisation, and Well-Being
