Be it blue or grey, make the most of this years “worst” monday

The third Monday of January is known by some as “the most depressing day of the year," also known as blue or grey Monday. Starting a new work week after having experienced the joyful festive period, in addition to primarily cold and wet weather, can lead to feeling sombre and dejected.

The Student Union is a pillar of student wellbeing, aiming to provide support and training to those experiencing problems with mental health. Some resources further detailing several options can be found here. We also have some suggestions regarding ways you can turn your blue Monday into a new Monday. These are of course not only applicable towards the third Monday of every January, but also for every Monday that you might have what the dutch like to call “opstartproblemen.”

BREW MONDAY

Take a walk around Enschede with a delicious cup of coffee in hand. We have a great deal with Coffee Fellows that may help with this. If coffee isn't your thing, you can also check out Stanislaus Brewskovitch or the Grolsch Brewery (when they open) for a more fun beverage.

YOU MONDAY

Take a moment for yourself. Undertake an evening of self-care; light a candle, schmear on a face mask, and put on an episode of your favourite show. You deserve it!

CHEW MONDAY

Go get yourself a delicious lunch instead of making a boring old boterham.

SHOE MONDAY

Get yourself that new pair of shoes you’ve been wanting. Ome DUO is there to support you.

DOO BE DOO MONDAY

Go to a music or mini-opera show, once the cultural sector opens up again of course.

FONDUE MONDAY

This one is pretty self-explanatory.

REVIEW MONDAY

Set yourself some attainable goals for the upcoming period. Maybe you want to be able to run a 12-minute mile, or visit all 12 Dutch provinces? It could be anything, just make sure you keep them realistic to avoid future blue Mondays.

TATTOO MONDAY

Only for the adventurous.

VIEW MONDAY

Go to Kinepolis for a “studentenprijsje” or rent a movie online, you know, like your parents used to do.

DO MONDAY

Crush it.
